[vc_row][vc_column width=»5/6″][vc_column_text]Statistics show that the vast majority of Hispanic Catholic young people were born and raised in the United States (of second and third generation status). Statistics also show that these same young people are leaving the U.S. Catholic Church in great numbers and are no longer self-identifying themselves as «Catholic». In addition, a great number of US.-born Hispanics are less committed to parish life and faith traditions when compared to their own immigrant parents and their first-generation peers. Why?

Hispanic Ministry and la Pastoral Juvenil have pioneered several fruitful ministerial efforts to reach second and third generation Latinos. However there is more pastoral planning needed in order for the Church to urgently and efficiently invest more resources in los jóvenes.

This workshop will employ the See – Judge – Act methodology to explore the reasons for this generational breakdown in the transmission of the faith, producing new insights and identifying effective practices for catechesis in pastoral context. We will address the following questions:

  • What is needed to effectively reach out to U.S.-born Hispanic young people?
  • What role does sacramental and systematic life-long catechesis have in supporting U.S.-born Hispanic youth?
  • What practical resources and strategies are available to reach and equip Hispanic families, parish communities, and dioceses to effectively catechize and minister to U.S.-born Hispanic youth?
  • How do we harmoniously connect the three realities: first generation, second generation, and third generation?
